Probe launched over uncommon unsafe Boeing 737 Max airliner roll occurrence

An aircraft's movement known as a Dutch roll has been described as its nose tracing a figure-eight pattern.

Recently on May 25, Southwest Airlines' Flight 746 did not result in any injuries, according to the airline and an initial FAA report. The report shared that the crew managed to restore control over the aircraft, and it landed safely.

However, the FAA categorized the event as an "accident" due to the significant damage sustained by the aircraft. After inspection, the FAA discovered damage to the standby power control unit, the part that regulates the rudder's movement.

The connection between the damaged component and the Dutch roll is still unknown.

The aircraft did not fly again since landing in Oakland, California other than being moved to a Boeing facility in Washington State. Boeing has not confirmed this news with CNN.

Southwest Airlines stated that they referred the case to the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board, and they are aiding in the investigation.

This incident happened around three weeks ago and was recently added to the FAA database. 175 passengers and six crew members were onboard, according to the airline.

CNN attempted to get in touch with the NTSB, but they have not disclosed whether they are examining the event.

In February, the FAA mandated airlines flying 737 Max 8 and related models to inspect the rudder assembly because of loose or missing bolts, nuts, and washers. The flaw could prevent the pilots from using their feet to control the rudder. The connection between this issue and the Dutch roll in May has not been established.
