Prisoner escapes from French van during violent attack resulting in the death of 2 guards.
A shocking event unfolded in France on Tuesday morning, as a vehicle carrying a prisoner from court to jail was attacked. This type of violence is highly unusual in this area of France, according to Dupont-Moretti.
Footage from the area showed a black SUV on fire, which had collided into a prison van near a toll booth. Two individuals wearing hoods could be seen carrying what seemed to be long guns.
Dupont-Moretti shared that this incident was the first time a French prison employee had been killed on the job since 1992. He also mentioned that one of the guards had a spouse and two children, while the other was five months pregnant. Two of those injured had life-threatening wounds.
The suspects responsible for the crime remain at large, as per the French national police.
Dupont-Moretti proclaimed passionately, "We will catch those responsible for this horrendous act. These people don't value life. They will be apprehended. They will go to trial. And they will be severely punished for their actions."
An extensive search is underway for the perpetrators, who successfully orchestrated a prison break. The inmate, a 30-year-old with a burglary conviction that also has him being investigated for a kidnapping linked to death, is currently being sought by authorities. CNN has decided not to name this individual at this time.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin stated on X that he has enlisted the support of the national gendarmerie and "several hundred" police officers to assist in the manhunt. The authorities are now creating roadblocks and setting up a security perimeter, reports BFMTV.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed on X that every possible measure is being taken to capture the criminals involved in the fatal prison break, ensuring justice can be served for the French people.
