President of the Bundestag Bas holds a memorial service for Sinti and Roma murdered by the Nazis
Bas had already visited the former concentration camp on Thursday. On August 2, 1944, the last Sinti and Roma imprisoned there were murdered in the gas chambers. Members of the minority, referred to as "gypsies," were systematically deported to occupied Poland by the Nazis from spring 1940 onwards. It is estimated that between 220,000 and 500,000 Sinti and Roma perished in the genocide perpetrated by the National Socialists.
After learning about the atrocities, Bas decided to deliver a solemn speech at the memorial site, honoring the victims. Recalling the tragedy, Bas often mentioned the forgotten speech during his advocacy work for Roma rights.
