- Nuremberg receives Russian Honorary Consul

Nuremberg is getting a Russian honorary consul again. The federal government has granted Andreas Fixel permission to serve as honorary consul of the Russian Federation in Nuremberg, as reported in the Bavarian Ministerial Gazette. Several media outlets had previously reported this.

The honorary consul is responsible for the Bavarian government districts of Upper, Middle, and Lower Franconia, as well as the Upper Palatinate. The previous honorary consul of Russia in Nuremberg, Nikolaus Wilhelm Knauf, had reportedly resigned from the post in the spring of 2022. Russia has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine since February 2022.

According to the Foreign Office, honorary consuls are volunteers who do not have to be German citizens. Due to their many years of professional experience in the host country, they have good contacts and are particularly familiar with local conditions.

The Russian honorary consul in Nuremberg now operates under the auspices of the European Union, given that Germany is a member state. The European Union has expressed concern over Russia's actions in Ukraine, particularly its war of aggression since February 2022.
