Track and field star Noah Lyles will no longer achieve his targeted Olympic gold in Paris after a narrow victory in the 100 meters. The American (19.70 seconds) was beaten by Letsile Tebogo in the 200 meters and had to settle for bronze at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. The Botswanan sprinter won gold in 19.46 seconds.
USA confirms Lyles' COVID-19 infection
100-meter Olympic champion Lyles was wheeled out of the stadium in a wheelchair as he was unable to leave on his own. Afterwards, the American sprinter and his team confirmed a COVID-19 infection at the Olympic Games in Paris. Lyles tested positive for the virus on Monday. He spoke to reporters in the interview zone while wearing a mask.
With this missed gold medal, Lyles has no chance of achieving his grand Olympic goal. He aimed to win both the 100 and 200 meters, as well as with the American relay teams in the 4x100 and 4x400 meters.
