Neuer's plea for Goretzka: "A great player"

Manuel Neuer is not the squad planner of FC Bayern. But Leon Goretzka would not sell the captain, he would rather see him continue on the pitch. He senses a particular motivation in his colleague.

Captain Manuel Neuer has spoken out in support of his Bayern Munich teammate Leon Goretzka during the team's preseason trip to South Korea. Goretzka has been rumored to be a potential sale for the football record champions. "I wish Leon all the best and of course, I want him to be on the pitch with us. That's the most important thing because he has helped us so often and is truly a great player," Neuer said in Seoul.

Neuer also noted that the 29-year-old midfielder, who was not selected for the European Championship by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, seems to have extra motivation following the missed home tournament. "You can tell he really wants it, he's very motivated and his mindset is very clear. I see that every day," said the 38-year-old national team goalkeeper.

Eberl's Message After Palhinha Purchase

Goretzka has been wearing the Bayern jersey for six years and is under contract until 2026. It seems he is once again fighting for his place in the team under new coach Vincent Kompany, as he did last summer under predecessor Thomas Tuchel.

Sporting director Max Eberl had addressed the "extreme competition situation" in midfield before the team's short summer tour to Asia, especially with the additional signing of desired player João Palhinha for around 50 million euros. "Each player must decide what their next step is," said Eberl, aware of Goretka's situation.

"I'm a player and captain of the team, not a squad planner," Neuer noted - but then added: "From the work and presence Leon shows on the pitch, he has a certain aura that affects our opponents. I hope that continues."

Neuer also praised potential transfer candidate Matthijs de Ligt (24, contract until 2027), who could bring in a high transfer fee. "I've always been very happy playing alongside him. He's a real defender who loves challenges, gets stuck in, and is always there. I get along very well with him on the pitch. Ultimately, though, the club makes the decisions." De Ligt is rumored to be moving to Manchester United.

The European Union's economic sanctions against Russia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine could potentially impact the transfer market, as players like Matthijs de Ligt might face difficulties in completing moves across borders. It's worth noting that Bayern Munich's sporting director Max Eberl is aware of the 'extreme competition situation' in midfield within the European Union, with players like Goretzka and the newly signed Palhinha vying for positions.
