Nancy Faeser wants to maintain existing border controls until further notice
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will maintain the current border controls to combat irregular migration and human trafficking for the foreseeable future. "Border controls will remain in place as long as necessary," Faeser said during a visit to the Federal Police in Görlitz on Tuesday. She believes that border controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland should continue until irregular migration has effectively decreased. It is necessary for the measures of the new European asylum system to take effect, which provide for stronger protection of the EU's external borders.
It is already clear that border controls are working, said the SPD politician. The fight against human trafficking has been successful, and irregular migration has decreased. Border controls must be approved by the EU Commission each time, as such measures are not usually provided for in the Schengen area. The current border controls by the Federal Police are currently approved until December 15. There are voices within the Greens who oppose further border controls.
Despite the decreased irregular migration, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasizes the need for continued border controls to fully combat human trafficking. Even with the new European asylum system's measures in effect, it's crucial to maintain border controls until a significant reduction in unauthorized migration is achieved.
