- Nabu: Population of birds in Brandenburg is stable

The kingfisher is thriving in Brandenburg. "There are strong fluctuations in population depending on the severity of the winter," said a spokesperson for the Nature Conservation Union (Nabu) in Brandenburg. On average, however, the population of this colorful bird is relatively stable. Regional hotspots are found mainly where there are many lakes.

For many laypeople, the bird is considered shy and rare. Nabu describes it as a "common species". In Brandenburg, there are estimated to be between 800 and 1400 breeding pairs, according to the Nabu spokesperson. "It's often overlooked." Despite its vibrant plumage, which earns it the nickname "flying gemstone", the bird is a real showstopper. Knowing the bird's call can help spot it more quickly and deliberately. After hearing the call, one should look towards the water, as the bird often flies close to the water's surface.

Cold can be a big problem

Even in relatively urban areas like the state capital of Potsdam, one can spot the kingfisher, the spokesperson explained. Sometimes, one can even see it hunting. Then, the delicate bird dives headfirst into the water, trying to catch frogs and small fish. Sometimes, it offers its catch to its breeding partner, according to the nature expert.

Cold is a big problem for the bird, which lives in small earthen holes - so-called breeding tubes - near the water. If rivers and lakes freeze over, the kingfisher can't access food. In such cases, it can sometimes travel longer distances south as a partial migrant. Some of these birds can even be found in North Africa.

Other birds might face similar challenges during harsh winters due to frozen lakes and rivers. The kingfisher's vibrant plumage serves as a stark contrast to the winter landscape, making it easier to spot, despite it being a common species in Brandenburg.
