After a hot start to the week, the annual heat record could be broken again on Tuesday. The German Weather Service (DWD) expects temperatures up to 37°C. "Strong, even extreme heat is to be expected," says meteorologist Tanja Egerer.

Furthermore, there could be thunderstorms in the mountains, with "heavy rain that can reach extreme, storm-like amounts, hail, and locally heavy gusts of wind."

During your afternoon walk, keep an eye on the weather and warning situation. Only in the northeast is another sunny and calm summer day expected. On Monday, the DWD provisionally measured the highest daily value of the year so far, 35.7°C in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Rhineland-Palatinate.

Outlook for the coming days

Wednesday starts in the west and northwest with shower-like, partly thunderstorms. The thunderstorms spread eastward during the day. The DWD warns of an increased risk of severe weather. "Heavy rain is particularly in focus," says Egerer. Hail and isolated heavy gusts of wind are also possible.

In the east and northeast, it remains mostly dry. The daily highs reach 29 to 34°C, cooler in the west and northwest.

On Thursday, the sky will be partly cloudy, remaining sunny in the south for longer. In the Alps and over the eastern mountains, there could be strong thunderstorms and local severe weather in the afternoon. Temperatures will reach 25 to 32°C, around 23°C at the coasts.

On Friday, it will be slightly rainy in the northwest, with temperatures between 21 and 26°C. In the rest of the country, it will be sunny, sometimes cloudy. In the afternoon, strong thunderstorms can develop in the Alpine foothills, with local severe weather possible. It will be warm again, with highs between 27 and 33°C.

The intense heat is predominantly affecting flat regions, but severe weather warnings have been issued for mountain areas, where thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. The coming days in the Alpine foothills and over eastern mountains might experience strong thunderstorms and local severe weather in the afternoons.
