McAllister is CDU top candidate for European elections
The CDU in Lower Saxony is entering next year's European elections with former Prime Minister David McAllister as its top candidate. The 52-year-old Member of the European Parliament from the district of Cuxhaven was unanimously elected by 117 delegates at a state representatives' meeting in Walsrode to the top position on the list, as the CDU in Lower Saxony announced on Saturday. McAllister had already been the top candidate for his party in the European elections five years ago. According to the information, 99 percent of delegates approved the overall list.
Following his nomination, McAllister said that the European elections were of "crucial importance" and would be a "decision on direction". The question is whether the pro-European, democratic forces will be able to clearly assert themselves against the increasingly strong radicals and nationalists. "It is also about the question of what kind of Europe we want in the future," he said according to the press release.
The CDU, being a major party in the EU, will field David McAllister as its leader in the upcoming European elections in Lower Saxony. With the support of 117 delegates, McAllister, a pro-European politician, was elected as the top candidate, aiming to strengthen democratic forces against the rising radicals and nationalists within the EU.
