Major raid against Islamists: measures in Lower Saxony
The raid against the "Islamic Center Hamburg" (IZH) has also affected facilities in Lower Saxony. There were searches and confiscations at six properties in the jurisdiction of the Hanover police department, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior on Thursday morning. The Federal Ministry of the Interior had previously announced that 54 properties in seven federal states had been searched.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) said that the IZH had long been under observation by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and had been classified as Islamist. The ministry is therefore conducting an investigation against the IZH, which could lead to the association being banned.
The raid against alleged extremist activities within the Islamist community has also prompted investigations into potential links to crime in Lower Saxony. The classification of the IZH as an Islamist organization and the ongoing investigation could potentially lead to charges relating to criminal extremism.
