Local Authorities Advocate for Reinforced Migration Policy Proposal

Before the discussion on immigration policy, the German Association of Local Authorities has put forth more stringent demands beyond the existing measures: Refusing entry without proper identification and revoking asylum status after recognition should be an option. Syrians should be deported.

As reported by "Spiegel", the German Association of Local Authorities insists that no state should be compelled to accept refugees in quantities that pose risks to their institutions' functioning. Signs of overload include an overstretched administration and inadequate housing or integration facilities. In many cases, these limits have already been exceeded or surpassed.

The talks between the federal government, states, and the Union parties are set to happen based on the "security package" presented by the government following the fatal knife attack in Solingen. This package includes tighter asylum and residency laws, stricter weapons regulations, particularly concerning knife carriage, and measures against violent Islamism. However, the Union has criticized this package as insufficient.

Deportations to Syria must be allowed

According to "Spiegel", the Association of Local Authorities demands the rejection of asylum applications from individuals whose identities cannot be verified with proper identification documents or equivalents. They also push for expanding detention and detention center capacities.

Deportations to Syria should generally be allowed, and the subsidiary protection status, which most civil war refugees in Germany receive, should be abolished. Those not at risk of individual political persecution should receive protection in neighboring EU countries with aid, not in Germany. Moreover, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) should react to improvements in the situation in countries of origin by revoking previously granted recognitions.

The paper suggests preventing refugees whose asylum processes belong to another EU country from entering Germany by denying entry at the German border. If this is not possible under EU law, the appropriate regulations should be amended. Lastly, the Association of Local Authorities suggests that individuals still in Germany due to tolerance should only receive benefits equal to basic provisions.

The European Union needs to reconsider its asylum policies, as suggested by the German Association of Local Authorities, considering the strain on local institutions. Deportations to Syria should be part of this revised policy, as the Association argues for the allowance of deportations to Syria and the abolition of subsidiary protection status for civil war refugees.
