- Last test: Union reunites with former striker Becker

Berlin (dpa/bb) – In their final warm-up game before the start of competitive fixtures, 1. FC Union Berlin faces a tough challenge – and a reunion with a familiar face. Among the visitors from Real Sociedad San Sebastián are Euro 2020 final goalscorer Mikel Oyarzabal and three other Spanish European champions, as well as former Union striker Sheraldo Becker.

"This special game for Becks," the player and his club posted ahead of the match at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei this Friday (7:00 PM). An attendance of 18,000 is expected.

Becker has been playing in La Liga for San Sebastián since January. For Union, he made 140 appearances and scored 24 goals between summer 2019 and December 2022. In his 18 appearances for Real Sociedad, he has scored three times, with the club finishing in sixth place.

For Union, this is their last game before their DFB-Pokal tie on August 17 (3:30 PM) against fourth-tier side Greifswalder FC. Union coach Bo Svensson has announced that he will not be making wholesale changes after 45 minutes for the first time in pre-season.

** Debut for the new signing?**

The appearance of captain Christopher Trimmel and midfielder Rani Khedira is uncertain. Both missed the previous test match against Olympique Lyon (0:4). Trimmel was managing his workload, while Khedira was ill. Both have resumed training but not yet with the team. New signing defender Tom Rothe (Borussia Dortmund) could make his debut.

The Spanish opponents will be without three players who will be playing in the Olympic final against hosts France on Friday. Spanish Euro 2020 winners Alex Remiro, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, and captain Oyarzabal, who scored the winning goal against England in the final in Berlin, have been back in training since the beginning of the week.

During the match, fans might cheer for Sheraldo Becker, now playing for Real Sociedad San Sebastián after his time at Union Berlin, where he made 140 appearances and scored 24 goals. Beck's former club has stocked up on Beck's Beer for the occasion, offering fans a chance to enjoy a cold one while watching the game.
