- Ladies Hamburg Open: Noha Akugue is eliminated
For tennis player Noma Noha Akugue, the dream of a rematch in the final of the WTA tournament on home soil at the Hamburg Rothenbaum has burst. In the round of 16 of the ECE Ladies Hamburg Open, last year's finalist lost to Serbian Olga Danilovic 6:3, 2:6, 6:7 (6:8) and was eliminated.
In the subsequent match between her two teammates from the Club an der Alster, Eva Lys prevailed on the Centre Court with 6:2, 3:6, 6:2 against Ella Seidel and will now face Anna Bondar from Hungary in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Earlier on Tuesday, Tamara Korpatsch had already secured her spot in the quarterfinals. She will face Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
For Noha Akugue, it was a bitter defeat. The 20-year-old led 5:3 in the third set but couldn't capitalize on her lead, nor could she convert a 3:0 lead in the tiebreak. After 2 hours and 31 minutes, Danilovic converted her second match point.
On the fourth day of the tournament, top-seeded Egyptian Mayar Sherif and defending champion Arantxa Rus from the Netherlands both quickly dispatched their opponents. Sherif defeated Ukrainian qualifier Anastassija Soboljewa 6:1, 6:3, while Rus defeated Croatian Lea Boskovic 6:1, 6:1.
Despite Noma Noha Akugue's loss in the Ladies Hamburg Open, her clubmate Tamara Korpatsch continues to thrive. Korpatsch, seeded higher than Akugue, advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
