1. Trump Trial Update
The trial of the unprecedented criminal charges against former President Donald Trump is nearing its conclusion this week. In the upcoming closing arguments, prosecutors plan to tell the jury how each witness they summoned and every piece of evidence they presented enhances their case. Trump's attorneys will present their closing arguments, followed by the judge's directions to the jury, indicating the charges against the former president they must consider. If found guilty, the judge could sentence Trump to probation or imprisonment of up to 4 years for each of the 34 felony counts of false business records.
2. Gaza Airstrikes
Global fury is amassing over Israel's airstrike on a refugee camp in Gaza, killing at least 45 people and injuring 200 others. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed this tragic incident as an "error" yet committed to pursuing his military's aims in Gaza. The White House condemned the strike, expressing their intentions to speak with Israeli authorities about the details of the tragedy. This airstrike, in addition to Israeli bombings in other Gaza parts, has killed more at least 6 additional individuals.
3. Severe Weather Alert
Approximately 47 million individuals across the central, southern, and eastern US are susceptible to severe weather conditions. Ruinous storms and tornadoes were responsible for at least 23 casualties over the long weekend, including four children, in Kentucky, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama. Deadly storms in Arkansas and Texas alone claimed 15 individuals' lives. The National Weather Service claims that central and northern Texas are at the highest risk, as they may experience large hail, lightning, and 80 mph wind gusts, and some tornadoes could develop.
4. Papua New Guinea Landslide
The remote Papua New Guinea region is calling for evacuations following last week's devastating landslide. Authorities fear up to 2,000 individuals might have been buried in the disaster that shook the mountainous Enga region on Friday. Local rescuers are struggling to reach the area due to its remoteness and poverty. Still, residents must dig through large swathes of the steep terrain. The area's geological features remain agitated, with rocks persistently falling and the shifted soil at the precipice of a catastrophic accident.
5. Pope Francis' Controversial Comments
The Vatican is in a tizzy as Pope Francis is alleged to have stated that gay men should be excluded from training for the priesthood. This statement was published in two Italian newspapers. The phrase, "frociaggine," which translates to "faggotry," or a "gay climate," was cited. The Vatican has not responded to CNN's inquiry on the Pope's alleged use of the term.
