Jenny Elvers admits alcohol relapse

Jenny Elvers was apparently found drunk at the wheel of her car by police in Brandenburg on Halloween. According to the Bild newspaper, the officers became aware of the actress because she had parked her car conspicuously. She is said to have drunk an alcoholic mixed drink in front of the police officers. The breath alcohol test showed a value of 1.7 per mille.

As a result, Elvers had to surrender her driver's license and car keys, and proceedings were initiated. A police spokeswoman confirmed this when asked by "Bild". Elvers then ordered a cab to take her to a hotel in Berlin.

In the meantime, the actress herself has also spoken out. "I've been suffering from depression for over ten years, which is why I started drinking and numbing myself with alcohol back then. I'm actually well controlled with medication. Nevertheless, there are always phases when I feel sad and realize: I have to be careful," the 51-year-old is quoted as saying by Bild newspaper. She made similar comments in her Instagram story, in which she also publicly apologized.

"I was just crying"

"I wasn't feeling well in the days leading up to October 31. I just cried, had no strength to get up," she wrote on Instagram. "I looked for an outlet, unfortunately the wrong one, and drank alcohol on that one day. Combined with the medication, it was the worst thing I could have done."

She explains that she got into her car anyway to drive from Hamburg to Berlin because she wanted to prevent her 22-year-old son Paul from seeing her in this state. Because her doctor, who she should contact in the event of such a relapse, is based in the capital. "I urgently needed help. On the road, when I realized I couldn't manage to drive safely, I pulled off the highway. I wanted to get some sleep until I felt better." The choice of parking space then brought her to the attention of the officers.

Fortunately, Jenny Elvers is now feeling better again, she continues. "The alcohol is out of my system, I'm completely sober again. I'm in treatment. The main reason why I drink is my depression." The fact that her driver's license is gone for now is the least of her problems. Fortunately, her condition today is not comparable to ten years ago, when she sat on the red sofa in the NDR talk show "DAS" and was barely in control of her senses. Immediately afterwards, she went into rehab and has - actually - been doing bravely ever since.

In an attempt to distract herself from her depression, Jenny Elvers turned to alcohol and watched entertaining TV shows, occasionally having a drink while doing so. After her recent relapse, she apologized for her actions on her Instagram story, expressing regret for her choice of coping mechanism.
