The pair are returning to their roles of mother-daughter duo Anna and Tess Coleman, with the plot mostly shrouded in secrecy.

Disney has offered some insight into the sequel, stating the movie follows Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) who experienced an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they grapple with the multitude of challenges that surface when two families blend, Tess and Anna learn that lightning may strike twice in this new journey.

A post featuring the pair was shared on X (previously Twitter) with the caption, "The Colemans are back and hitting the big screen in 2025! Production for the Freaky Friday sequel is underway!"

Among the stars reprising their roles are Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. Joining the cast are Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Sophia Hammons.

Lohan and Curtis have hinted at a sequel to their 2003 portrayal of a mother-daughter duo who swapped bodies. This film was a remake of the 1976 original, featuring Jodie Foster as the daughter and Barbara Harris as the mother. The premise is based on the 1972 novel "Freaky Friday" by Mary Rodgers.
