Insight: Tom Brady's epiphany on his roast arrived too tardily.
In the live streaming event on May 5, Brady was subjected to a roast by comedian Kevin Hart and an array of celebrities and ex-colleagues. Some jokes were directed at Brady, which he found amusing. However, when the jokes drifted to his divorce with supermodel Gisele Bündchen, who he has two children Benjamin (14) and Vivian (11), Brady shared his discomfort during a podcast, stating, "I didn't like the way it affected my kids."
In the same podcast interview, Brady referred to himself as "naive." He acknowledged, "It's a good lesson for me as a parent; I'm going to be a better parent as I go forward because of it."
Frankly, if Brady wasn't expecting these consequences, it seems remarkable considering his status as a seasoned public figure. He chose to appear on the podcast to mitigate the fallout of personal jokes during "The Greatest Roast." Despite this, when Jeff Ross alluded to Robert Kraft's past legal issues with prostitution during the show, Brady was quick to ask Ross not to repeat it; but when his divorce was discussed, Brady appeared unbothered, sipping his drink.
Considering Brady's extensive experience with parenthood and celebrity, it seems highly improbable that he was entirely oblivious to what might ensue. As a well-known public figure who agreed to participate in a show that commonly tackles sensitive topics, it's doubtful that he anticipated escaping unscathed. In fact, if we imagine a mother confronted with a similar situation, the narrative would appear unrealistic. Firstly, it would sound implausible for a mother to claim she hadn't foreseen the potential impact on her children. In addition, her response could be detrimental to her public image, labeling her an incompetent parent.
Contrast this with Catherine, Princess of Wales. When she confirmed her cancer diagnosis in public language on March 22, she and her team brushed off criticisms for delaying disclosure. It seems apparent, from a communications perspective and as a mother, that she prioritized the well-being of her children over her personal image. Surprisingly, she scheduled the announcement to coincide with the start of her children's spring break to avoid any incidental questions in school.
Unlike Brady, whose oversight of the circumstances could have been more deliberate, Catherine's actions appear both protective and considerate of her children's feelings. Conversely, Brady may have inadvertently caused more harm by viewing the joint appearance as a lucrative opportunity. As an executive producer of the series, he should've known better that folk would draw attention to him and potentially expose his family.
Parenting is a continuous process of growth and admission of faults. It's never an easy ride. Brady could've handled the situation differently - taking responsibility and pledging not to repeat his mistakes should've been a better approach. Ultimately, he had a chance to learn from the experience and hopefully do better next time. Paraphrased from The Atlantic: Tom Brady’s dumb feminism.
