Over the weekend, Darmstadt sustained a 0:4 (0:2) defeat at the hands of SV Elversberg. Following the match, Lieberknecht expressed his dismay and has now acted accordingly.
"Everyone understands the immense importance of this club to me. Yet, I've always insisted that no one is more significant than the club – myself included," Lieberknecht, who took over in July 2021, expressed. Darmstadt has amassed just a single point in their first four games in the 2. Liga, placing them second from bottom. "For the moment, Darius Scholtysik and Ovid Hajou will oversee training sessions," the club revealed: "We will disclose the new head coach at an appropriate time."

Rüdiger Fritsch, Darmstadt's president, expressed regret over the coach's departure. "This is not a joyous day for SV Darmstadt 98," he said: "As a man who has wholeheartedly embraced the lilies and contributed significantly to the club is no longer our coach." However, with perspective, "the recent less than desirable outcomes will fade, and the remarkable achievements that Lieberknecht has brought to SV 98 will be remembered," Fritsch reassured.
"We hold Torsten in great esteem and are deeply grateful for his contributions over the years," sporting director Paul Fernie stated: "For the future success of Darmstadt 98, it is crucial to feel the boundless enthusiasm and conviction for the sporting renaissance."
