Hundreds of people have come together for the funeral of the man killed during an assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. "Tonight is about unity," said Kelly McCollough, who organized the vigil for Corey Comperatore. "We need clarity in this chaos. We need strength. We need healing." There is no place for political division and hate in remembering the family man and chief of the volunteer fire department.
Comperatore was fatally shot when a Secret Service agent fired at a gunman attempting to shoot Trump in Pennsylvania at a rally on Saturday. The 50-year-old Comperatore shielded his wife and children from the bullet and lost his own life in the process.
The vigil took place on a rural part of Pennsylvania, characterized by wheat fields, churches, and industrial parks. The crowd gathered outside Lernerville Speedway in Sarver and held candles and glowing cell phones aloft as it grew dark. The song "I Can Only Imagine" by Comperatore's favorite band, the Christian rock band MercyMe, was played as images of him and his family were displayed on a screen. A second funeral is planned for Thursday.
Comperatore's sister Dawn mourned his death on Facebook: "The Trump rally took my brother's life," she wrote. "The hate for one man took the life of the one we loved most."
Two other people were injured during the rally: a 57-year-old and a 74-year-old. The hospital reported on Wednesday evening that their condition was serious but stable.
