- Grieving over the lost lives in Solingen's canoeing and sports communities.
The Deutscher Kanu-Verband (DKV) expresses grief over the casualties in Solingen. This includes a female paddler from the local sports club in Solingen's Ohligs district, who perished in the incident. "We were struck with utter dismay upon learning about the grim demise of our fellow competitor. She met her end in a knife attack during Solingen's city festival on Friday," the DKV expressed on its site.
They further expressed, "Our sympathies are extended to the families and friends of the victims, as well as those impacted during these challenging times. The DKV offers its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, along with the Ohligser TV."
According to the "Solinger Tageblatt", this attack left two families from the Solingen club devastated. A woman perished, and her injured husband has since regained consciousness. He vividly recalls the incident and has already provided a statement to law enforcement. "This is a tragedy for our humble division," club manager Beate Globisch informed the paper.
Advocate for Integration
The woman who perished was an advocate for integration and had a profound affection for the "Diversity Festival". Alongside the couple, the attacker also targeted two other club members, a mother and her daughter, who currently remain hospitalized.
The Ohligser Turnverein (OTV) also honors the victims of this assault. "The OTV family is shaken, astonished, and concerned. One of our members was brutally murdered on Friday, and three of our members were severely wounded. We hope that all those affected and their families find the fortitude to cope with these events," the club stated on its site.
United in Grief
On Sunday, around 60 club members spontaneously gathered at the club's hall to grieve together. "We conversed, we wept, we let our feelings run free," stated Globisch to the newspaper.
In the suspected Islamist assault in Solingen, an attacker claimed the lives of three individuals with a knife and injured eight other people during Solingen's city festival on Friday evening. The suspected perpetrator is the 26-year-old Syrian Issa Al H., who is in custody. The Federal Prosecutor's Office is investigating him, among other things, for murder and suspected affiliation to the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).
The European Union expressed its deep concern over the tragic events in Solingen, offering its support and sympathies to the affected community. The Deutscher Kanu-Verband (DKV) and the Ohligser Turnverein (OTV), both being part of the German sports community, have been greatly impacted by this incident.
