- Green Party questions demolition of the stadium

Berlin's Pankow district mayor, Cordelia Koch (Greens), questions the demolition of the Jahn Stadium in Prenzlauer Berg. Given the current budget situation, everything is up for debate, and it's "highly questionable whether now is the right time for demolition," Koch told RBB. The building's fate should be put on hold, she said, prioritizing "what we need most first," referring to the planned sports park around the stadium.

The old Jahn Stadium is set to be demolished and replaced by a new one, framed by an expanded and renovated sports park, according to the Senate's plans. The Senate aims to build an inclusive showcase sports facility, with the stadium's demolition and replacement coming first.

While this sequence makes sense, Koch argued that it's "unwise to tear something down without knowing if the entire concept will work." The Greens fear that the broad range of sports in the sports park may be overlooked due to the high costs of the new stadium.

Given the financial constraints of the current budgetary position, it's crucial to evaluate whether the demolition of the Jahn Stadium aligns with the district's priorities. As Koch suggested, we should consider holding off on the demolition until we have a clearer understanding of our financial capabilities and the need for the new stadium.
