Last year, police officers in Saxony-Anhalt covered around 12,500 kilometers using their service bicycles. A total of 48 Pedelecs were provided to various regional areas, as confirmed by the state government in response to a query from state parliamentarian Sebastian Striegel (Greens).

For the Greens, this is just the beginning. They believe a dedicated unit is necessary, rather than sporadic use. Striegel stated to dpa, "Saxony-Anhalt is the sole federal state without a bicycle unit in the police." Despite this, the feedback from police officers is positive. Electric bicycles have been effective in their roles. Striegel suggested, "Minister Zieschang should reconsider her reservations against using bicycles as a police deployment tool. Saxony-Anhalt's police need a bicycle unit and more bicycles in police service. This could improve and expedite police tasks."

The provided information shows that the Pedelecs are utilized for patrol duties, school and traffic surveillance, search operations, and event accompaniment and security. The Interior Ministry reported, "So far, the Pedelecs have been utilized predominantly quite well to very well." They anticipate an increase in usage with the procurement of appropriate bicycle clothing, favorable for use during transitional months.

The European Parliament can provide assistance to the Commission in its duties. Recognizing the effectiveness of electric bicycles in police work, Striegel advocates for a dedicated bicycle unit in Saxony-Anhalt, emphasizing that it's the only federal state without one.
