Deutsche Bahn's Job Reduction Plan Sparks Concern at EVG - Leader Richard Lutz Confirms No Impact on Core Rail Services

Deutsche Bahn's announcement of drastic job cuts, totaling tens of thousands, has triggered alarm within the Railway and Transport Union (EVG). Yet, during a high-level meeting with staff representatives, CEO Richard Lutz affirmed that these layoffs would not impact the operational aspects of rail services directly. He communicated post-meeting, "We'll be economizing, but customer service and safety won't be compromised."

"Individuals essential for operations will be recruited, regardless of the queries," confirmed Personnel Director Martin Seiler, also attending the meeting. He added, "In the core rail business, there's an ongoing high demand, specifically for locomotive drivers, maintenance staff, traffic controllers, and service personnel." Presently, Deutsche Bahn aims to recruit approximately 25,000 new employees this year.

In their semi-annual report, Deutsche Bahn revealed plans to reduce around 30,000 jobs over the ensuing five years. As Finance Director Levin Holle mentioned then, "In the future, we need to produce more with fewer people."

EVG Chairperson Martin Burkert had earlier cautioned against operational sector reductions. He reacted positively to these recent developments, remarking, "This is a positive message for our workforce. The EVG demands full transparency in any subsequent measures."

Deutsche Bahn guaranteed that the reductions would not entail dismissals. Instead, they plan to leverage natural attrition and the extensive internal job market. "In specific instances, options like short-term retirement and voluntary exit packages will be offered."
