French taxi drivers call for a compensation fund

French taxi drivers are so far disappointed by the Olympics: Due to insufficient income, they have called on the government to set up a compensation fund. "Demand has decreased, and our work is hindered by the Olympics," a letter from taxi unions to the Ministry of Transport reads. According to the letter, obtained by the AFP news agency, the influx of Olympic spectators is not making up for the loss caused by traffic restrictions, closures, and the deterrence of regular customers. This trend began in the spring with the installation of the first Olympic venues. Additionally, the government has encouraged Parisians to go on vacation or work from home. The establishment of a security zone before and during the opening ceremony further restricted their activity. In some cases, taxi drivers have earned up to 50% less than usual.

The Ministry of Transport acknowledged that security measures have significantly hindered traffic. However, it has since improved. Minister of Transport Patrice Vergriete promised to examine the taxi drivers' concerns.

In the Greater Paris area, 90% of taxi drivers from the largest taxi company, G7, wanted to work during the Olympics. They initially hoped for increased earnings, as taxis - unlike Uber and other transportation companies - are allowed to use the so-called Olympic lanes, reserved for those related to the Olympics.

However, French authorities are encouraging Olympic visitors to use public transportation and rental bicycles. The signage of metro stations and bike paths in Paris has significantly improved thanks to the Olympics.

  1. In response to the financial struggles faced by taxi drivers due to the Olympics, the Minister of Transport, Patrice Vergriete, announced his commitment to scrutinize the drivers' concerns and potentially establish compensation funds.
  2. Recognizing the impact of traffic restrictions and the increasing use of public transportation during the Olympics, French taxi drivers from G7 are advocating for the establishment of adequate compensation funds to help make up for their reduced earnings.
