Fraudster steals large sum of money through call center scam
In a telephone scam in the Rhein-Pfalz district, a stranger has stolen almost 10,000 euros. He wrote to a 58-year-old man via WhatsApp and claimed that his granddaughter's cell phone was defective, police said on Friday. At the same time, he gave the 58-year-old another number where he could supposedly reach his granddaughter. Later, the stranger asked the 58-year-old to transfer 9664 euros to an unknown account, which he did. The fraud was only discovered after the victim had reached his daughter.
The police repeatedly warn against the so-called grandchild scam, in which alleged relatives contact the victim because of a feigned financial shortage and ask for money.
