Four juvenile Germans were freed from custody in Mallorca following over a year of pre-trial imprisonment.

Four young Germans, allegedly involved in a group sexual assault, have been granted bail following over a year of detention on Mallorca. This was verified by a trustworthy source in Palma, as reported to dpa.

The group is said to have coerced an 18-year-old German woman they encountered at Ballermann beach into sexual activity, or simply stood by without intervening. As per police, one of the suspects allegedly recorded the incident on his phone in July 2023.

The five individuals, aged 21 to 23 at the time, were apprehended on Mallorca under suspicion of group sexual assault. According to dpa, they hail from North Rhine-Westphalia, specifically the Märkischer Kreis in Sauerland. The Public Prosecutor's Office in Hagen is still pursuing charges against the five, as stated on Wednesday.

One of the German tourists' associates was freed prematurely. He successfully provided evidence that he had no part in the alleged sexual assault.

The release of all suspects does not signal the end of the case. Investigations are set to carry on. In Spain, the penalty for such convictions can lead to imprisonment for up to 12 years.

The allegation of group sexual assault against the four Germans has been a central point in their detention on Mallorca. Despite the granting of bail, the Public Prosecutor's Office in Hagen continues to pursue charges against them, underscoring the seriousness of the allegation.
