- Fortuna player dies in a swimming accident in Duisburg
A youth player of second-division football club Fortuna Düsseldorf drowned tragically in a lake in Duisburg. "We are deeply shocked and cannot grasp this news," said sports director Klaus Allofs. The entire club is in shock and deep mourning, as stated in a social media post.
The player from Fortuna's U17 team drowned on Tuesday evening in the Bertasee and later died in hospital from his injuries. As reported by the fire department and police, the young man was first pulled out of the lake by divers and resuscitated.
Our sympathies and deepest condolences go out to the family, relatives, teammates, and the entire youth performance center team, said Allofs. The training and match operations of all youth teams from U9 to U19 will be suspended indefinitely.
The tragic bathing accident occurred during an evening at the Bertasee, leading to the player's unfortunate demise in the hospital later. With the suspended training and match operations, the club expresses their sympathy and deepest condolences to everyone affected.
