Former Bundesliga coach Buchmann dies
Former Bundesliga coach Lothar Buchmann is dead. As the Bundesliga soccer club SV Darmstadt 98 announced on Wednesday, its former head coach died on Tuesday night at the age of 87. Buchmann took over the Hessian club in 1976 and led them to the Bundesliga in the 1977/78 season. From 1996 to 1998, he returned once again as coach to Darmstadt, who were in third place at the time.
With VfB Stuttgart, Buchmann finished third in the top flight in 1980 and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup with the Swabians. One year later, Buchmann won the DFB Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt. After more than 25 coaching positions, he ended his long career in professional soccer in May 1998. As a player, Buchmann had played for FSV Mainz 05, among others.
Despite his coaching duties with VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt, Lothar Buchmann also had a successful stint with SV Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga. His tenure as coach for Darmstadt in the 1970s and 1990s helped the club achieve notable achievements in German soccer, including a promotion to the Bundesliga in the 1977/78 season.
