- First unit of Iris-T SLM air defence system for the German Army
The introduction of the modern air defense system Iris-T SLM in the German Armed Forces is progressing. The procurement office in Koblenz (BAAINBw) announced that the first firing unit has been accepted by the manufacturer. The Air Force is expected to have Iris-T SLM available by the end of 2025. The manufacturer has adapted the system to NATO interfaces, which is currently being inspected.
The ground-based air defense system Iris-T SLM is used against threats from the air, such as drones, aircraft, helicopters, or cruise missiles. "Especially ground-based air defense is capable of protecting areas over extended periods," the office stated. Germany has already supplied this system to Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia. There, it has proven itself "under real combat conditions."
The Iris-T SLM air defense system is designed to counter aerial threats, including drones, aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles. The modernization of this ground-based defense system is essential for safeguarding vast territories over an extended duration.
