Fire department operation - Fire at two houses: Three people in hospital

Three people were taken to hospital on Tuesday following a fire in two apartment buildings in the center of Mannheim. A fire department spokesman said in the evening that they were being investigated to see if they had carbon monoxide poisoning. The fire has been extinguished.

Roofing work was being carried out on the five-storey buildings. A roofer had noticed smoke coming from an expansion joint in the early evening and informed the fire department. An expansion joint is located between two adjoining buildings, for example, and contains insulation material.

The fire had spread to several floors. Several apartments were evacuated, it was further reported. The emergency services treated the three people, who were then taken to hospital. The apartments are still habitable, said the spokesperson.
