- Fire after Ukrainian strike on weapons depot near Kursk
Following a Ukrainian strike on the Russian border region of Kursk, a fire broke out at an arms and military equipment depot. The General Staff in Kyiv announced via Telegram that the attack was carried out using a modified marine rocket system. Explosions were observed at the target.
The Ukrainian navy possesses Neptune anti-ship missiles, which can also be used against ground targets, with a range of nearly 300 kilometers. Kursk itself is only about 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Previously, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported shooting down a cruise missile of this type over the Kursk region. According to the governor of the region, Alexei Smirnov, the fire has been contained. Additionally, Russian military reports claim that a total of 19 Ukrainian drones were shot down over the cities of Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Kaluga, Rostov, and the annexed Crimea.
Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian aggression for over two years. In addition to conventional warfare, the Ukrainian military regularly targets Russian hinterland logistics by striking deep into Russian territory. Kyiv is pressing its Western allies to allow the use of supplied rockets for attacks on Russian territory.
The Ukrainian military's use of Neptune anti-ship missiles against ground targets in Kursk showcases their innovative application of military technology. Despite the success of the strike, the international community needs to carefully consider Ukraine's request to use supplied rockets for attacks on Russian territory.
