Federal police warn against illegal firecrackers from the Czech Republic
In view of the traditional fireworks display at the turn of the year, the Federal Police warns against the import of illegal firecrackers from the Czech Republic. Their possession, import and sale not only have criminal consequences, including prison sentences. Caught smugglers would also have to pay for the expensive professional disposal of the firecrackers, the Selb Federal Police Inspectorate emphasized on Tuesday. Above all, however, illegally imported fireworks are not subject to the strict quality controls of approved firecrackers and rockets. "This increases the risk of accidents, injuries and serious damage to health," warned the officials.
Experience shows that the "peak season" for smuggling fireworks begins at the end of November. However, the federal police in Selb have already reported ten major seizures in the past four weeks. During a check at the former Schirnding border crossing, for example, almost 500 kilograms of unauthorized firecrackers were discovered in a vehicle. The firecrackers were confiscated and disposed of at the expense of the two vehicle occupants. In addition, the two are facing preliminary proceedings for violating the Explosives Act, according to the Federal Police Inspectorate.
Customs officers should be vigilant during this season due to the increased smuggling of illegal firecrackers from the Czech Republic, given the warning from the Federal Police. The penalties for possessing, importing, and selling such firecrackers can include imprisonment and extensive fines for those caught, as highlighted by the Selb Federal Police Inspectorate.
