- Federal Court of Justice reviews judgment against former concentration camp secretary

The potentially final legal proceedings to address the Nazi-era mass murders are set to begin on Wednesday (starting at 10:00 AM) at the Federal Court of Justice (BGH). The 5th Criminal Senate of the BGH in Leipzig will hear the appeal against the conviction of a former secretary of the Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig. The Itzehoe Regional Court had sentenced the now 99-year-old Irmgard F. in December 2022 to a two-year youth sentence on probation for aiding and abetting murder in 10,505 cases.

Her lawyers had filed an appeal, stating that key legal issues had not been clarified by the Regional Court. The appeal hearing will primarily focus on the question of whether working as a typist in a concentration camp that was not a pure extermination camp can be considered aiding and abetting murder. The BGH has already announced that a decision will not be made until August.

The criminal case regarding the mass murder atrocities committed during the Nazi era, specifically in the context of the Stutthof concentration camp, is the subject of the upcoming appeal at the Federal Court of Justice. The appellant, Irmgard F., is challenging her conviction for aiding and abetting murder in thousands of cases, arguing that her role as a typist in the camp does not constitute such a crime.
