Federal Authorities are deliberating on strengthening their border control measures.

Despite the drops in negotiations with the Union concerning fresh chats on irregular immigration, the Interior Department shares that dialogues are happening with the federal states about tightening border regulations. Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared on a Wednesday gathering that Nancy Faeser's introduced suggestions, disclosed on Tuesday, will be executed, regardless of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group's support.

These proposals involve scrutinizing at the border if asylum seekers have the right to a procedure in Germany or if they must be sent back to another Schengen region nation. Till the dilemma is sorted, they are to be housed in set facilities. As stated by the Interior Ministry's spokesperson, strong collaboration with the federal states is crucial in this matter, given their responsibility in this sector. The state delegates have also shown their readiness to "consult more swiftly."

Asylum seekers, majority of whom should have applied for asylum in another European nation, will be transported from these facilities back to those nations.

The Union discontinued negotiations with the federal government and states on Tuesday due to the traffic light coalition's unwillingness to comply with the Union's demand for the immediate rejection of all asylum seekers at the border. Participants mentioned that the Union was suggested to test this restriction at particular border points - even though the government thinks this isn't in line with European law. However, the Union declined this proposition.

The Interior Ministry noted that substantial return activities have already taken place, specifically over 30,000 since October 2023. Inside government circles, there's anxiety that the public discussion about the Union's more militant suggestions could now persuade neighboring countries like Austria or Poland to reject any returns at the border.

The Interior Ministry is actively engaging in discussions with federal states about implementing stricter border arrangements, focusing on asylum seekers who should have applied in another Schengen region nation. Following the Union's withdrawal of negotiations, it becomes crucial to ensure smooth border arrangements, considering the potential for neighboring countries to reject returns.
