FDP parliamentarian runs to CDU

After the spectacular switch of a Bundestag representative from the Greens to the CDU, the Christians Democrats in Hamburg can also rejoice over a turncoat. This woman justifies her step with the politics of the traffic light government.

The former FDP Bürgerschaftsabgeordnete Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein has defected to the CDU and is expected to receive list place two at the Bürgerschaft election behind party leader Dennis Thering. "I am very happy that Hamburg CDU has managed to pull off a real coup," said Thering. Treuenfels-Frowein announced her entry into the CDU for the Bürgerschaft election in March 2025.

A special faction meeting is planned for Monday morning, during which the previously non-factioned Bürgerschaftsabgeordnete is to be immediately admitted into the CDU faction. Treuenfels-Frowein justified her switch, among other things, because she could no longer represent the positions of the FDP in the traffic light coalition at the federal level.

She counted this, for example, with regard to the Cannabis regulation, citizens' income, or shortened naturalization waiting periods. She had long been considering the switch. "The step was not easy for me, but I am going with full conviction."

On the platform X, the politician spoke of a "new start." She entered the FDP and the CDU on Thursday. Surprisingly: In the X profile of Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein, there was a CDU-colored statement overlaid on the profile picture at that time: "There's never been more to do. Program of the Free Democrats." Later, she removed the picture.

The CDU had already been able to rejoice over a turncoat in the Bundestag in Berlin. The 30-year-old Melis Sekmen spoke of a "step forward" and added: "My perception of how and in what style politics is made has further developed."

Sekmen had announced her exit from the Greens and from the Green Bundestag faction herself: "We need a debate culture in which people can express their opinion and their concerns without being put in a drawer," she explained as the reason.

The FDP in Hamburg might find it challenging to fill the vacant position left by Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein, who recently switched to the CDU. Her switch was heavily influenced by her disagreement with the FDP's politics in the traffic light coalition, specifically on issues like cannabis regulation, citizens' income, and shortened naturalization waiting periods.

Following the footsteps of Melis Sekmen, who defected from the Greens to the CDU in the Bundestag, Treuenfels-Frowein's move strengthens the CDU's presence in Hamburg politics, potentially influencing future election outcomes.
