Tech Giant Meta (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram) to Source Renewable Energy from Powerhouse RWE

Meta, the internet conglomerate behind Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has inked long-term power supply deals with energy giant RWE. The two companies have agreed on contracts for two solar parks currently under construction in the U.S., RWE announced from its Essen headquarters.

Construction has already commenced on the 274-megawatt County Run Solar project in Illinois and the 100-megawatt Lafitte Solar project in Louisiana, with both slated to come online by the end of 2025. The financial details of the contracts remain undisclosed. RWE claims to be the third-largest renewable energy company in the U.S.

Meta's renewable energy manager, Urvi Parekh, stated, "Partnerships with renewable energy companies like RWE are a key component of our approach to energy procurement." The goal, Parekh added, is to power Meta's data centers and offices entirely with renewable energy.

Meta will acquire renewable energy from the County Run Solar power plant in Illinois and the Lafitte Solar power plant in Louisiana, both of which are under construction with RWE. This collaboration supports Meta's aim to operate its data centers and offices entirely on renewable energy, as indicated by its renewable energy manager, Urvi Parekh.
