Every year again: judges rate Dresden Christmas stollen
It is sniffed, felt, inspected and tasted: On Tuesday, a jury tested the famous Christmas stollen for its inner and outer texture, smell and taste during a public inspection in Dresden. The experts have been examining a total of 152 stollen since October, according to the Dresden Stollen Protection Association.
As the genuine Dresden Christmas Stollen has to meet high quality standards, around 100 bakeries and confectioners from Dresden and the surrounding area have to undergo the stollen test every year. Only then is the Striezel awarded the golden seal.
The Striezel, for which there is a fixed composition, are assessed according to a points system. At least 16 points are required for the Stollen to receive the coveted golden seal.
After passing the rigorous testing, only Stollen bearing the city's seal can be considered authentic Dresden customs. The annual Stollen custom includes thorough inspection of texture, smell, and taste to ensure adherence to these customs.
