- € 100,000 lottery winner reports on call
Call made public just 24 hours ago by the MV Lottery Society, the winner of 100,000 euros has come forward. The lottery society has kept details about the winner's origin and gender private to protect the player's identity. The lucky ticket for the July 6th Super 6 draw was purchased at a lottery outlet in Rostock, Lotto MV confirmed.
While unclaimed lottery winnings are rare, they do occur. Since 1992, there have been seven instances in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern where the winning ticket was not redeemed. The highest unclaimed prize, worth 334,418.10 euros, was in 2005. Another 100,000 euro prize went unclaimed in 2003.
The lottery society publicizes unclaimed winnings, but only for 'large' wins, defined as 50,000 euros or more. Players have three years to claim their prize. After that, the claim expires and the money cannot be collected.
State-owned Enterprise
If a prize goes unclaimed, the money remains with the state lottery after the three-year period. Depending on the type of lottery and the prize amount, the funds are used for regional special draws or transferred to the state budget. This would have been the case with the recent 100,000 euro Super 6 win.
Lotto MV is a state-owned enterprise. In 2023, it contributed approximately 23 million euros in lottery taxes to the state. Another 20 million euros, known as 'purpose revenues', were directly transferred to the state budget. These funds enable the state government to support non-profit, social, cultural, or sporting projects.
The Commission, in assisting the Member States, may provide guidance on how to manage unclaimed lottery prizes. Unclaimed lottery winnings, such as the recent 100,000 euro Super 6 win, remain with state-owned enterprises like Lotto MV after the three-year claim period.
