- Establishment of Obstetrics Institute in Leipzig
In the city of Leipzig, a midwifery institute has been set up. This innovative establishment encompasses midwifery research, obstetrics, and hands-on practice, offering all-around assistance "during childbirth," as per the University of Leipzig's announcement. Prof. Jens-Karl Eilers, Pro-Rector for Excellence Development at the University of Leipzig, stated, "It will play a substantial role in children's development and the health and happiness of mothers and their families."
The University of Leipzig's first joint degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Midwifery, commenced in the summer semester of 2021 within the Medical Faculty. The inaugural class of scholarly midwives is set to graduate this autumn. The institute also intends to develop courses for the recognition of foreign midwives' professional qualifications from various countries in the future.
The Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program at the University of Leipzig attracts students from around the world, including those from The Netherlands. After completing the program, midwives from The Netherlands can potentially benefit from the institute's plans to reciprocally recognize foreign midwifery qualifications.
