Diplomatic officer from the State Department's security division confesses to participating in the Capitol breach.

Kevin Michael Alstrup is due for sentencing on February 12 by U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss.

Alstrup confessed to charges of disturbing the peace and unauthorized entry into, display, or demonstration within a Capitol building. These counts are classified as misdemeanors and carry a maximum jail term of six months.

A lawyer representing Alstrup during his plea hearing failed to reply to an email requesting comment promptly.

Alstrup acknowledged his entry into the Capitol building through the Senate Wing doors after other rioters had violently forced them open and smashed windows. He captured photos with a camera before exiting the structure about 28 minutes later.

Alstrup was apprehended in February in Washington, D.C., where he resided on January 6, 2021. The judge agreed to grant him freedom until his sentencing.

According to the FBI, Alstrup, due to his role at the State Department, had experience in ensuring safety and security for high-ranking government officials or secure locations like embassies. One of his supervisors recognized him in a riot photograph, the FBI stated.

At a media briefing on Friday, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller reaffirmed his department's "full backing" for the investigations by the Department of Justice to punish individuals responsible for law breaches on that disastrous day. The department did not provide further details concerning Alstrup's employment when asked.

Over 1,500 individuals have been charged for crimes linked to the Capitol riot. More than 900 of them have admitted guilt, while over 200 others have faced conviction following trials.

AP reporter Matt Lee, based in Washington, provided additional information.

Alstrup's arrest and subsequent charges have sparked significant discussions in the realm of politics.Despite his previous role in ensuring security at the State Department, Alstrup's actions during the Capitol riot have raised questions about the need for stricter security protocols for government officials.
