David Copperfield left luxury penthouse unattended
Mold, Dirt, and Damage: The New York Apartment of Star Magician David Copperfield Isn't Looking Magical Right Now. In Fact, the 67-Year-Old Has to Face a Lawsuit.
He sliced himself in half, crossed the Great Wall of China seemingly, and made the Statue of Liberty disappear. In the 80s, millions were amazed by the spectacular magic tricks David Copperfield performed in various TV specials. Yet, no "Abracadabra" or "Alakazam" seems to have helped the magician, who became a superstar through his TV appearances, with mundane housekeeping.
The $7 million apartment Copperfield owns in the exclusive "The Galleria" complex in New York is completely run-down. "The Independent" reports that the penthouse is in such a bad state that experts fear mold and decay could spread to the apartments below, potentially jeopardizing the entire building's structural integrity.
This is revealed in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday by the owners of "The Galleria." In it, the 67-year-old Copperfield, the world's highest-paid magician, is accused of causing damages worth around $3 million (approximately €2.7 million). Not just to his own "formerly pristine multi-story penthouse," but also to other tenants' apartments. Besides the visible decay of the former luxury penthouse, the plaintiffs also fear potential health hazards for other residents.
Copperfield Allegedly Left the Apartment "Devastated"
Photos submitted to the court show stained carpets, water damage, dirt, and mold in the rooms and bathroom of the apartment. Copperfield, who hasn't lived in the apartment for some time but still owns it, allegedly left it "devastated" and in an "appalling" state, according to the lawsuit. Copperfield, who once dated supermodel Claudia Schiffer, is said to be refusing to acknowledge the consequences of his actions and denies any responsibility for the damage he has caused to the building and his former neighbors.
Joshua Stricoff, the lawyer who filed the lawsuit on behalf of "The Galleria," told "The Independent" that pictures speak louder than words. In his opinion, the photos of the completely neglected and dirty apartment speak for themselves and require no further explanation.
The lawsuit alleges that David Copperfield, the tenant of the penthouse, neglected the property, causing damages worth millions. The arrival of experts revealed potential mold and decay, posing a threat to other tenants' health and the building's structural integrity.
