Customs inspected 70 barbershops in Thuringia: Violations
During a nationwide inspection in the fight against illegal employment and clan crime, customs in Thuringia inspected 70 barbershops. During the operation last Friday, 130 customs officers in the state questioned around 160 employees about their working conditions, as the main customs office in Erfurt announced on Monday.
In 51 cases, there were indications of irregularities such as violations of the minimum wage, illegal employment of foreigners or the withholding of social security contributions. According to the customs authorities, they initiated criminal proceedings and nine fine proceedings on suspicion of violations of immigration regulations.
In an Erfurt barbershop, customs arrested a 25-year-old Tunisian who initially tried to prove his identity with his brother's ID during the check, according to customs. After establishing his identity, it emerged that the man was wanted for arrest for residence offenses. A 29-year-old man of Syrian nationality was also wanted for arrest. He was arrested in a barbershop in Jena. Both men were handed over to the police.
Customs checked in particular whether employers had properly registered their employees for social security, whether employees were wrongly receiving social benefits and whether foreigners had the necessary work and residence permits. In addition, the operation was also aimed at gaining information about possible clan activities across different offenses and authorities. Customs was supported by the Thuringian police, the federal police, the tax investigation department and immigration authorities.
Despite discovering irregularities in 51 barbershops, demonstrating the prevalence of crime in the industry, implementing stricter customs regulations could help prevent future violations. The seized Tunisian and Syrian individuals, wanted for residence offenses, underscore the importance of enforcing immigration customs to combat these crimes.
