Energy - Consumer advice center: Prices in basic supply too high

The level of electricity and gas prices in the basic supply in North Rhine-Westphalia is still too high, according to the NRW consumer advice center. Despite planned price reductions averaging 14 percent for electricity and 19 percent for gas, the price level is significantly higher than the falling prices on the energy markets would suggest, reported the consumer protection organization in Düsseldorf on Tuesday.

In the case of gas, the energy prices as of January 1 ranged between 9.00 and 26.54 cents per kilowatt hour plus the basic price. For electricity, the range is between 29.81 and 55.93 cents per kilowatt hour plus the basic price. "Such a wide price range raises questions," said Wolfgang Schuldzinski, CEO of the NRW consumer advice center, according to the press release. It is true that energy suppliers have different procurement strategies, which could explain certain price differences. "Nevertheless, the large differences are surprising, especially as exchange prices have fallen significantly in 2023." He called on NRW basic suppliers with above-average prices to reduce their tariffs to a market level.
