The couple crossed paths in 1997 while filming the horror classic "I Know What You Did Last Summer". According to "E! News", the actor revealed that their initial relationship was purely platonic, lasting for a period of two years. However, an unexpected date led him to realize that Gellar was his soulmate, despite skepticism from others regarding their romance's longevity.

They exchanged vows on September 1, 2002, in Mexico. That same year, they reprised their roles in the comedy "Scooby-Doo", which earned them the Kids' Choice Award. The arrival of their daughter in 2009 added a precious member to their family, and their son completed their family's bliss three years later.
