Coach Marco Rose denies release for Timo Werner
Can Timo Werner leave RB Leipzig in winter - or does he even have to go? It was only on Thursday that the Saxons confirmed a report in the "Bild" newspaper. The DFB star has been cleared to play. One day later, coach Marco Rose backtracks sharply.
Coach Marco Rose of Bundesliga club RB Leipzig has denied that he has been given the go-ahead for a winter transfer of striker Timo Werner. "There is no such thing," said Rose, who expressed his appreciation for the international and reported on internal talks with Werner and his entourage: "Timo is our player. Timo is a top player. He's having a difficult season." The previous day, several media outlets had spoken of a release for Werner, citing Leipzig circles as a source. The club told ntv.de that they had only confirmed a conversation between sporting director Rouven Schröder and the player, but not a possible release.
It was about "performance" and about "offering himself", Rose now emphasized, but there was no one at the club "who had spoken in any way about a transfer". Werner is currently in a slump in form and is now only striker number four for Leipzig. "Fight, work, keep going," Rose recommended to the 27-year-old, who will once again be missing from the crucial away game at Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (18:30/Sky and in the ntv.de live ticker) due to injury.
Rose still sees Werner as a candidate for the European Championship
"I expect Timo to lead the way with his quality and his CV and carry the team along with him," said Rose. Werner is not "miles away" from the starting eleven. The attacker could increase his chances of taking part in the European Championship in the summer with a move in the winter. He has not played a role under national coach Julian Nagelsmann recently. "If we go through this phase together - which is what I would like to see - there is also a chance that he will recommend himself for higher tasks again," said Rose.
Rose expects a "very open fight" against BVB, who are in crisis. In the battle for Champions League qualification, the Saxons (26 points) are in fourth place, directly ahead of the runners-up (25). Former BVB coach Rose was the successor and predecessor of current coach Edin Terzić in Dortmund. With a win at the Westfalenstadion, he could now ensure that his successor has to fear for his job on the bench.
