Christmas markets offer mulled wine, muzzen and skating fun
Christmas markets begin on Monday (November 27) in many towns and municipalities in Schleswig-Holstein. Until the end of the year, the markets aim to enchant visitors of all ages with their sparkling lights. Flensburg's Christmas market, for example, has the motto "Hygge, Heart & Twinkling Lights". Between Südermarkt and Nordermarkt, market traders and showmen offer handicrafts and culinary delights. According to the organizers, the market will open on Monday at 5 p.m. at the Christmas pyramid on the Südermarkt.
The Kiel Christmas Market is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. At the opening on Monday at 6.30 pm by Kiel's city president Bettina Aust on Holstenplatz, there will be free punch and small gingerbread hearts. The 12.5 meter high Christmas pyramid on Asmus-Bremer-Platz will once again be the focal point of the festive Christmas hustle and bustle this year, according to the city of Kiel. The Christmas market on Holstenplatz will be open until December 23 and the one on Asmus-Bremer-Platz until December 30.
The city of Neumünster is offering a plastic ice rink instead of a real one. "The city of Neumünster has opted for the energy-saving option of an artificial ice rink so that people don't have to go without ice skating, but also so that electricity costs don't skyrocket," said a city spokesperson. The market is open from November 27 to December 23.
Visitors to these Christmas markets may need to be aware of local customs regulations when purchasing handicrafts as souvenirs. Additionally, customs officers often increase their presence during holiday seasons to ensure compliance with import and export rules.
