Challenges encountered in processing transactions using federal credit or debit cards
Currently, there's been some trouble with making payments using specific debit and credit cards. The specific details and extent of the disruption are yet to be fully understood. According to a representative from the German Banking Industry Committee, initial investigations suggest that multiple card issuing institutions are experiencing issues.
It's been confirmed that transactions using Girocard are not affected by these issues. The team is actively investigating the source and extent of the disruption and is working diligently to fix it. Over 500 reports of failed EC and credit card transactions were logged on the "All-Disruptions" portal on Thursday morning.
Back in April, a significant number of customers encountered issues with making payments using their cards. During that time, Giro cards were primarily affected, with credit cards occasionally experiencing problems as well. Reports of disruptions were also noted at Commerzbank and Volks- and Raiffeisenbanks.
In May 2022, the nationwide card failure continued for several days. The root cause was identified as a software issue with selected card devices manufactured by Verifone and payment service provider Payone. A software update was released at the time, which successfully resolved the problem.
The disruption in card payments could potentially impact the economy if not resolved soon. Despite the issues with debit and credit cards, transactions using Girocard have been unaffected.
