CDU foreign minister calls for German military assistance to Israel
The CDU advocates for German military involvement in a defense coalition for Israel. "In light of the impending Iranian attack, the federal government must finally wake up and offer Israel military support for defense," said CDU foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter to news magazine "Spiegel". This could involve refueling combat jets of allied nations, or even deploying German Eurofighters. Any such engagement should solely focus on protecting Israel's population. However, Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated on Saturday that German involvement in a mission to protect Israel, given the escalating tensions in the Middle East, is currently not on the agenda.
Following the killing of political leader of the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, Iran and its allies, Hamas and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, have threatened Israel with retaliation. As tensions escalate, the U.S., Israel's closest ally, is sending additional warships and combat aircraft to the Middle East region to strengthen the protection of U.S. forces in the region and support Israel's defense.
The European Union, being a significant international player, could potentially contribute to the peace efforts in the Middle East by imposing sanctions on Iran in response to its threats towards Israel. The European Union, through its diplomatic channels, could also urge its members to offer humanitarian aid to countries affected by the escalating tensions.
