In the 1970s, Richard Rogler first stepped onto a stage and has since been a staple of the cabaret scene. Among other things, he hosted the late-night show "Mitternachtsspitzen" in the late 1980s. Now, the Cologne-based comedian has passed away at the age of 74.

Comedian, actor, and author Richard Rogler has died. He passed away on Sunday, his family announced in Cologne without providing further details about the circumstances of his death. Rogler would have turned 75 next month.

Richard Rogler was born on September 15, 1949, in the Bavarian town of Selb. After studying in Cologne, he began his theater career in the 1970s and presented his first solo cabaret program in the mid-1980s. He was known for his political satire and socially critical shows, such as "Freiheit aushalten!", "Anfang offen", and "Das müssten Sie mal sagen, Herr Rogler". His work focused on social injustices, media criticism, and the entanglement of economy and politics. He retired from the stage in 2018.

Long-standing guest role in "Lindenstraße"

But Richard Rogler was not only seen on stage, he also made frequent appearances on television. From 1988 to 1991, he hosted the legendary cabaret show "Mitternachtsspitzen", which continues to air today. He was also a regular member of Dieter Hildebrandt's "Scheibenwischer" until 2008. With "Roglers Freiheit", Rogler even had his own satire show on WDR, and he appeared in the "Lindenstraße" as the deceitful real estate agent Panowski from 1987 to 1998.

Throughout his career, Richard Rogler received numerous awards, including the Grimme Prize (1989), the German Cabaret Prize (1985), the Salzburger Stier (1990), and the Bavarian Cabaret Prize (2002). From 2000 to 2008, he was also a professor for cabaret and chanson at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig.

Little is known about Richard Rogler's private life. He is said to have lived with his wife Dörte in the Cologne Agnesviertel. His daughter Marianne is also active in the cultural scene. She ran an artist agency, where she represented her father, Ingolf Lück, Markus Maria Profitlich, and others.

The evening entertainment scene in Germany lost a prominent figure with the passing of Richard Rogler. His long-running stint as the host of "Mitternachtsspitzen" in the late 1980s was just one of his many contributions to the world of cabaret.
